“Duck Dynasty” star Willie Robertson has revealed he’s voting for Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump because he appreciates the “tough” and “no-nonsense” attitude of the billionaire businessman.
During a recent interview with Gannett Louisiana, the Louisiana native said there’s no doubt Trump will soon close in on the Republican nomination for president, as he recently swept five northeastern primary states.
“It looks like it’s about over,” the “Duck Commander” CEO said, adding that Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are clearly employing “desperation tactics” to derail Trump.
“It’s looks like they’re trying a ‘Hail Mary’ to me,” Robertson said. “They’re trying to keep him from getting enough delegates for an automatic nomination and then take the nomination from him at the convention. If they do that there’s going to be a lot of mad people.”
When asked about Trump’s often controversial statements, Robertson laughed and said, “I grew up with Phil, so I’m used to that.”
He added, “[I like Trump’s] non-nonsense attitude. We need somebody tough.”
In an earlier interview with Fox News, Willie said he prefers Trump as a presidential candidate due to his extensive business experience and dedication to preserving the family.
“Our system is broken…I think a lot of the politicians are just more of the same. I want someone in there who can shake it up…I like a man who puts his money where his mouth is and isn’t in debt to anyone…I think [Trump’s] the man for the job,” he said.
“He’s run a business and I think, you know, so many of these people come in. They’ve never run a business. They don’t know what they’re doing when they get there, and I just like somebody who’s run a business, especially New York City. I think that’s an advantage. I think you couldn’t be that successful in New York City without having to be able to work with different kinds of people, and I think he’s done that and I think he will actually work with other people,” Willie said.
The reality star, who is also an outspoken social conservative, officially endorsed Trump back in January after his friend and former Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal dropped out of the race.
“Mr. Trump is a real leader,” Robertson said in a press release at the time. “He represents success and strength, two attributes our country needs. Like me, he is a successful businessman and family man and I endorse his candidacy for President of the United States.”
Willie’s father, Phil, and brothers Alan, Jase and Jep have all publicly backed Cruz; however, in a January interview with Fox News, the family explained that they believe any Republican candidate is better than the Democratic “alternative.”
“It could have been worse,” Phil told host Sean Hannity of his son’s choice for Trump. “He could’ve said, ‘Dad, I’m going with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders’ […] Then we would have had some worries, my man!”
